I did appreciate the 90Hz refresh rate when scrolling through my social feeds. It even worked with the notoriously finicky Instagram, except… photo captions would overflow into the edges and get eaten up, and Stories still had blank space flanking them. You’ll notice odd aspect ratio issues here and there, thanks to the uncommon 1,892 x 1,344 resolution, but for the most part apps expand to cover the whole screen nicely if you enable the automatic span setting. It’s basically two phones sandwiching a camera and you can use one side at a time. When the panels are back-to-back, the system will keep the last screen you used active, while the other shows a message saying you can double tap it to switch over. Though the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is heavy and its screen is a little too narrow and cramped, it still offers a better experience in this mode. But the bump was surprisingly unobtrusive, and while I didn’t mind using the Duo 2 as a single-screen device, it’s still a bit too wide to replace my phone, especially for one-handed use. Why does Microsoft believe this shouldn't apply to their device? Whether it's arrogance, oversight, or under-engineering, it's going to hold the Duo 2 back.My main concern when I first saw the camera bump was that two sides would no longer lay flush against each other when opened all the way up. I so wanted to be excited with this device, and maybe I'll be proven wrong after the first user reviews start to come in, but I really feel that omitting an external screen to act as a camera viewfinder and quick notification centre is going to be a problem.Įvery foldable mobile device that's starting to see some consumer success (the list is admittedly short.Galaxy fold and flip, please step up) has an interactive, useful external screen. If they're willing to sacrifice the smooth outer, ahem, surface of the device with a camera bump, why not go all in and add more furniture to the outer body with a decent size external screen? How on earth would you use it without one?" Even with the original Duo, I believed that an external screen would enhance the user experience, but when those Duo 2 pictures leaked, my first thought was "surely now they'll add an external screen. It would have been a nice olive branch to early adopters. I'm also disappointed (though not surprised) that Microsoft does not appear to offer a trade in deal for the Duo 1 for the Duo 2.

I still have an irrational desire to get a Duo 2 but I'm going to temper that until I find more function in the software on my Duo 1.

I'm hoping the Duo 1 gets an Android 12 update in-step with Duo 2 to see what the next iteration of the device is. I pull it out and tinker with it from time to time. the large foldable screen that Samsung and other Android hardware makes are bringing to market. I don't really see developers starting to embrace dual screens vs. Side-by-side apps are nice but outside of Microsoft's applications there isn't much out there that takes advantage of separate panels. The other problem on the software side is that Microsoft is the only company with an Android phone that has two seperate screens instead of one large fold-able screen.

Most updates for the duo are just security and stability updates and not bringing much to the feature side. the Duo 1 is STILL running Android 10 and we are close to the launch date of Android 12 for goodness sake. There is still a big question mark on the software side. We'll see if getting a Duo that has a proper camera array and modern features is enough to get people to buy into the platform. The Duo 2 is what the Duo 1 should have been instead of a device carrying a bunch of legacy tech that really felt half-baked and overpriced.
